Tree Peony ‘Xue Ta’ is a beautiful white flowered Tree Peony. The flowers are huge, up to 25cm (10″) or more in diameter and there can be over a hundred on mature specimens. They are hardy, low maintenance, disease resistant, and flower each spring. Tree Peonies are native to China and are an ideal plant for oriental gardens, and other types of garden from modern to cottage. They also make great cut flowers for indoor vases. Height and spread: 150cm (60″).

Culinary information: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow tree peonies in sun or semi shade, in well drained soil. Choose a position that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong early morning sunlight. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 10cm (4″) below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.

Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Remove faded flowers and cut back old foliage in autumn. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
